I have Excel 2003 and Vensim DSS 5.3 and I have been successfully using the GET XLS DATA function for a variable with one subscript. There is nothing in the release notes to suggest that versions 5.3 and 5.2a are different w.r.t. these functions so in theory you should be able to get them to work...
