VenSim appears to require Write privs in App.Path

Post by TomTregilgas »

Is this the case?

What happens?

VenSim has been installed on Windows XP. User is member of Users (and therefore doesn't have write privs to the directory c:\program files\vensim)

When starting VenSim, the program fires off two stop messages "Failed to record startup info" (see attached GIF VenSimBug.gif)

When finished working with VenSim, Version 5.0b (see attached GIF vensimInfo.gif), VenSim fires off a parting stop message.

Any possibility (other than using Cacls.exe) to avoid this?

It appears that VenSim is going to have problems as it always writes to the app.path directory. Any way to modify this behavior?

Thanks,

Vensim writes to the vensim.ini file which is normally located in the \windows (\winnt etc) directory. You could try creating a copy of this file in a directory where you can write to, and then create a new shortcut to start Vensim which has the full path to the new ini file as an argument, for example,

c:\progr......\vensim\vensim.exe "c:\.....\newvensim.ini"

Vensim should then store its info there rather than try and write to the protected directory.

Toolbar definitions are also stored in the vensim program directory, once you start using a new ini file, it would also be a good idea to move those files as well.

Let me know how you get on.

Tony.
