Vensim/Stella vs hydrology

Post by "Marek Susta" »

Dear Pierre

If you won=B4t find any usefull informations in the Molecules of Structur=
e
(link at the page of SD Society), look at the Powersim AS pages
(
http://www.powersim.no ), there=B4s a link to Sandia Labs and this compa=
ny is
working on a big project in China. Actually it is more about sustainable
development, but hydrology is a big part of the problem. According to my =
own
experiences does not matter what simulating enviroment you are using, if =
you
have the mental model, you can program it in Constructor, Stella, Vensim
etc.

Vensim/Stella vs hydrology

Post by Richard Palmer »

Dear Mr Bryant;

My email is indeed
palmer@u.washington.edu

We have been using STELLA and Powersim to create models of large water
resources systems and decision support tools for about 8 years.

We have worked with consultants, states, cities and regional organizations
to help develop what we called "Shared vision models" to facilitate
understanding and appreciation for the trade-offs in water management and
to help stakeholders reach appropriate decisions on how best to manage
water.

My University of Washington homepage is
http://www.ce.washington.edu/palmer.htm

>From there you can access my webpage that talks about my research and
modeling efforts.

Thanks for you interest.

Vensim/Stella vs hydrology

See my reply below to this recent posting to the System Dynamics
list. -Herb Bryant.

Concerning SD/Stella models in water resources, perhaps this reference
will help:

"Dr. Richard N. Palmer"
http://maximus.ce.washington.edu/~palmer/index.html

Hes worked with Stella models of hydrologic systems. Several of this
models are, I believe, available for downloading from the web, or at
least the reports using them are so available.

Dr. Palmers e-mail address is: palmer@ce.washington.edu so please
drop him a note.

I located his web site last April (1998) after a co-worker attended
a presentation he gave at a water resources conference this year.
I think the URL of the workshop was:

"The South Carolina Drought Workshop"
http://water.dnr.state.sc.us/climate/sc ... kshop.html

Since you didnt specify what you DID find in your bibliographic
search, or whether you found anything at all, Im hoping the above
reference will be of help.

Why System Dynamics models and SD modeling languages are not more
frequently used in water resources and hydrologic cycle modeling
is a mystery to me. Perhaps, the limitations of computer processing
power in the past made maximum efficiency paramount so FORTRAN was
used in all cases and ease of coding was secondary. Or, are there
deficiencies in the SD modeling languages? I suspect availability
of SD software tools locally may play a part (whereas FORTRAN
programmers were once more plentiful).

P.S. - Oops! Its time to leave for work. Fortunately, its only a
few minutes drive away. :-)
