SYSTEM DYNAMICS & SYSTEMS THINKING
New Zealand 1999

The seventeenth international conference of the System Dynamics Society
will be held in conjunction with the fifth Australian and New Zealand
Systems Conference on July 20-23, 1999, in Wellington, New Zealand.
This conference is expected to attract more than one hundred
and fifty experts and practitioners from around the world,
specialising in system dynamics, systems thinking and other
systemic methodologies.


PROGRAMME

The main theme of the conference is "Systems Thinking for the Next
Millennium." Sub-themes will examine the applications, contributions of
and the linkages between systems thinking, scenario planning and
strategic simulation. The conference will provide an opportunity to
review the systems thinking methodologies that have been developed over
the past half century and reflect on their suitability for the next
millennium.

Papers are invited in the theory and application of any area which can
contribute to the Conference theme of "Systems Thinking for the Next
Millennium." This theme may be addressed through the perspectives of:

- System dynamics
- Hard, soft and critical systems
- Adaptive and strategic planning
- Organisational learning and research
- Chaos and complexity
- Philosophy of systems thinking
- Action learning and research
- Community systems research
- Community and soft OR
- Management science methodologies
- Cognitive processes in systems thinking and learning
- Systems methodologies

In other areas of interest, parallel sessions and some plenary
sessions will cover the range of work being done by systems thinking
and system dynamics practitioners worldwide, including:

- applications of system dynamics and systems thinking in
corporate and public policy
- developments in simulation tools and techniques
- advances in the modelling process and group model building
- experiences in organisational and managerial learning
- contributions to theory building in the social and natural sciences
- development of management flight simulators and simulation games
- understanding of complex non-linear dynamic systems
- contributions to system dynamics and systems thinking teaching
materials and methods

LOCATION

The conference will be held at the Plaza International Hotel,
within easy walking distance of the heart of Wellington city.
Wellington is the beautiful harbour capital of New Zealand and the
centre of government and business. A compact and attractive city,
Wellingtons blend of modern and historic buildings house fantastic
theatres, shops and restaurants. Wellington prides itself on its
lively cafe culture. The brand new and internationally acclaimed
national museum, Te Papa is just two blocks away from the
conference venue.

A couple of hours easy travel from Wellington takes you to the
famous vineyards of Marlborough and the Wairarapa. Outdoor
activities, from golf to skiing to sailing, are readily available
and Wellington is the gateway to the spectacular natural beauty of
both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. An exciting and
varied programme has been planned for delegates and accompanying
partners.

Wellington has an international airport and is easily accessible by
air via Auckland.

Rooms at the Plaza International Hotel have been reserved and can be
pre-booked through the Conference Manager. A range of accommodations
at different rates is also available.


ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS

Submissions for conference presentations, including tutorial sessions and
workshops, as well as papers are invited. A written paper is required for
plenary presentations, but is optional for parallel sessions. One
page abstracts (maximum 250 words plus title and author(s) identification)
for all papers and presentations should be sent to the Programme Chair
by February 1, 1999. Abstracts should be submitted by E-mail or on a
disk as a plain text file. Papers and presentations will be peer reviewed,
and acceptances will be communicated on March 1, 1999.

Plenary presentations will be selected from completed papers only,
which must be submitted by May 1, 1999. Invitations to submit a paper for
consideration for a plenary session will be sent March 1, 1999.

If you are interested in organising a tutorial session, workshop or
other activity around the conference dates, please submit a brief
description of the activity and its space and time requirements to the
Conference or Programme Chair before February 1, 1999.
