Queries for models

Jim Hines asked, "What do you (and others) make of the many queries in this
list asking for models on this or that topic?"
I suspect some are simply trying to avoid reinventing the wheel. Others
probably want to see how others have handled similar problems (a slightly
different aim). Still other might want to see how the masters minds work.
Just as models have to be fit to a problem, I suspect a query such as Jims
has to be fit to the situation; in other words, if we were to ask those
making such requests, wed probably get different answers.
