using ST/SD to improve design of environmental education pro

Post by MacovL@aol.com »

I just finished a book that Ed Gallaher passed on to me. It may give you
some insight to your question. Gladwell, Malcolm. 2000. The Tipping Point.
Little Brown and Company. Merely putting this title out in this forum
fulfills the premise of the book...right Ed?

using ST/SD to improve design of environmental education pro

Post by jodi.smith@au.pwcglobal.com »

Hi everyone,

Methodology and Example Documents Search

My Phd focuses on improving the design of large scale education programs for
business and the community on sustainability. I am attempting to show that
traditional approaches such as pamphlets and case studies have minimal impact-
they access the part of the audience that has mental models in line with the
educational message (single loop learning) but not those with incongruent mental
models (as these peoples mental models prevent them from listening or reading
the material- they think its irrelevant). And that in order to get change in the
rest of the audience we need to understand the factors that affect them in
taking action on environmental issues- to understand what leads them to have the
mental model or theory of action that they have and to design our approaches to
address these mental models (double loop learning).

Ive been playing around with ST to show all the factors that affect business
and the community in changing their ways and with Viviane Robinsons Problem
Based Methodolody which focuses on addressing mental models in order to solve
problems. These are helping to explain why traditional programs have had minimal
impact. At this stage i am planning as a part of my methodology to review
traditional stormwater pollution reduction education programs run by local
government, and to develop recommendations for change / guidelines for running
programs.

Has anyone got any examples of these methodologies used for reviewing
effectiveness of education programs? Examples of how the methodology was used in
a Phd study? Examples of educational programs designed to address mental models?
Reference material they think might help?

Thanks
Hope youre all well
Cheers and best wishes
Jodi
