WARNING and Notes on email viruses

Post by "geoff coyle" »

Dear All,

A couple of weeks ago someone who shall be nameless sent my email address,
without first asking my permission, to Ericcson Telephone in the hope of
getting a free mobile phone. The invitation from Ericcson wasa hoax and,
unhappily, also contained a virus which infected my signature file.

WARNING I am not sure if this thing has been cleaned up!!!!!!

[Hosts Notes

First, you may rest assured that messages coming directly from this list will
not contain any email viruses. I only allow plain text messages, and the way
I moderate the list does not permit attachments.

Second, the names and email addresses of subscribers to this list are not
available for anyone to use. It is a closed list. Only I have access to
the names, and I only use it to manage the list.

Third, when you post a message to the list your email address is attached
to that message. It can be read by anyone receiving the message and, since
the messages are archived on web sites, can also be harvested by software
programs designed to do this (I dont think this happens much but it is
possible).

Fourth, NEVER EVER open an email attachment that you are the least bit unsure
of. There is a virus that reads peoples address books and mails a virus to
them so the message could be from your best friend. You need to be sensitive
to context.

Finally, please do not abuse the email privelages of people who post messages
to this list, or those who respond to your own postings. Junk email is clearly
completely unacceptable. Use good conservative judement about what it is
appropriate to send to people. As Geoff points out -

What a nuisance some silly and greedy people can be.
