the meaning of widget

Post by carolus »

Dear SDrs,

According to the timelines of the 20th century,
<http://timelines.ws/20thcent/1961.HTML>
the word widget comes from the Musical How to Succeed in Business
Without Really Trying, by Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows who produced the
Broadway hit.
The play lampooned life at the fictional Worldwide Widget Co.
A widget is simply a hypothetical product - it doesnt exist.

However, it remains unclear whether the word widget was invented by the
editors of the musical
or just (re)used
