Modeling Assistance Workshop at Palermo Conference

Post by paulnewton@attglobal.net »

This is a reminder of the Modeling Assistance Workshop at the upcoming
International System Dynamics Conference in Palermo, Italy.

GENERAL

The Modeling Assistance Workshop at last years Atlanta conference was
so well received that the Society requested that it be continued and
expanded this year. So, in Palermo, modeling assistance opportunities
include two workshops instead of one, as well as the opportunity to
obtain modeling assistance at any time during the conference. This
years workshop is being run by Dr. Jack Homer and Paul Newton.

This offering enables modelers to obtain feedback on their specific
modeling questions from modeling coaches.

Modelers questions may relate to a specific model that modelers are
thinking about, studying, or developing. Questions may also relate to
something that modelers dont understand in one of the system dynamics
textbooks or software packages. You might even get the author of the
textbook or software as your coach!

This workshop is for modelers with all levels of modeling ability, from
beginners to advanced. Questions may range from problem articulation,
formulation of a dynamic hypothesis, formulation of a simulation model,
model testing, or policy design and evaluation.

Modelers may bring whatever materials they need to describe their
modeling question, ranging from pencil and paper, to books, to posters,
to laptop computers. If you bring a computer, be sure your battery is
fully charged, as we cannot guarantee AC power.

SCHEDULE

Most of the MA sessions will be scheduled for one of the two MA
Workshops to be held 1130-1300 on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 30th and
31st. Although each workshop is formally only 1.5 hours long, the
workshop is intentionally scheduled before the two hour open lunch
period so that modelers and coaches may continue their discussions into
the lunch period if they so desire.

In addition, a small area with flipchart, whiteboard, worktable and
chairs, and AC power will be continuously available throughout the
conference for MA sessions.

SIGNING UP

Modelers: If you are even tentatively interested in receiving assistance
on your modeling question(s) at the conference, please notify us in
advance of the conference by writing to
paulnewton@StewardshipModeling.com. Your writing in advance will help
us arrange for sufficient coaching resources, and will also act as an
early registration (first come, first served) in case we can arrange
only a limited number of coaches. Finally, if you would like some help
framing your modeling question(s), Paul will be pleased to work with you
via email to help you clarify them.

Coaches: If you are tentatively interested in coaching, please write to
Jack Homer at jack@homerconsulting.com. Jack will work with you via
email to ensure that the modeling question(s) assigned to you are
commensurate with your system dynamics abilities and interests.

Spectators: Last year in Atlanta, we had numerous spectators at the
Modeling Assistance Workshop. Feel free to join either of the sessions
as a spectator.

Sincerely,

Jack Homer and Paul Newton
