I attach two calls for contributions to special security sessions for
the International SD Conference. I have been asked to convene the
sessions by the program co-chairs and the documents attached have been
approved by Graham Winch.

If there is need to make revisions previous to posting it do take
contact ASAP.

International System Dynamics Conference – Oxford 2004

Announcement of a special interest stream on:
Security Dynamics

One of the special streams planned for the Conference covers ‘Security’, which here is
understood in the broad sense of preventing, detecting and managing threats, whether due to
mischance, errors, violations or malice. Anyone presently researching this field or involved with
it as a practitioner and using system dynamics in their analysis is invited to submit a paper on any
issue related to security dynamics. Papers will be scheduled within one or more plenary or
parallel Security Dynamics sessions.

We especially invite contributions that are centred within the main theme of the conference, viz.
of a collegial harmony in the sense of honest broking of ideas and respectful disagreement when
issues are controversial, and it is expected that at least one session will comprise papers that
reflect this theme directly. As the general call relates, System Dynamics is not based on any
particular management, economic or social theory, only on what are observed, deduced or
presumed to be true causal interrelationships. In this sense, the special stream will particularly
welcome papers that consider the role and potential of system dynamics in consensus building,
conflict resolution, knowledge surfacing and sharing, and theory testing in the field of security.

We are also considering a further session using a round-table colloquium format. This will
comprise a set of short focussed presentations raising individual specific issues in information
security, followed by an open discussion between presenters and floor participants concerning
these and further implications. Further details of this session, including additional authors’
guidelines for short-paper contributions to this session only, are given in a separate call for
contributions.

Anyone interested in contributing a full paper or offering an opening issue for the colloquium
should contact the session convenor Jose J. Gonzalez at Jose.J.Gonzalez@hia.no.

International System Dynamics Conference – Oxford 2004

Announcement of a special workshop session on:
Research Challenges in Dynamics of Information Security

Among information security experts there is an emerging recognition of system dynamics as a
promising methodology for dealing with areas not well addressed by traditional security approaches.

So far system dynamics has not been much used in traditional environments working with information
security. Conversely, there are but few – and then mainly recent and preliminary – studies of
information security originating in system dynamics environments. This special session at the
conference aims at facilitating collaboration between domain experts in information security and
people with experience in system dynamics.

This special session at the conference is proposed to take the form of a round-table colloquium
discussion examining challenges to the field of information security that would seem appropriate for
system dynamics studies and, hopefully, developing some research agenda. The format of the session
will be:

1. Approximately 6 speakers will be asked to give brief introductions (maximum 5 minutes each) on
challenges to the field of information security that would seem appropriate for system dynamics
studies, as the basis for discussion.
2. A round table discussion will consider these issues, look for links, identify critical success factors,
and try to develop some ways forward (around 45 mins.)
3. The session will conclude with nominated rapporteurs bringing together two themes:
(i) What can be done in practical terms to encourage and enhance the collaboration of
SD and information security experts?
(ii) Is there an agenda for essential research into the field of SD in information security?

Practitioners and academics interested in contributing to the opening portion with brief presentation
should contact the session convenor. All presenters will be asked to provide a brief ‘Notes and
Insights’ type paper for the proceedings* focussing on a single issue – either a problem or a pointer
for good practice. These papers should comprise:

* Abstract of around 80 words.
* Main body of around 800 words. This should have three components: a very brief
background to the issue being presented, a clear statement of that issue and its
implications, and a concluding section that does not necessarily give answers, but
rather poses critical questions concerning practice or research in information security
that the issue raises.
* References. A maximum of 6 citations should be given to key literature items.

Anyone interested in contributing an opening issue for discussion should contact the session
convenor Jose J. Gonzalez at Jose.J.Gonzalez@hia.no. We would similarly be interested in
hearing from anyone interested in acting as rapporteur, and/or with any other
suggestions/ideas.
* Intending contributors may, if they wish, also submit a full paper with a more detailed account or discussion
for refereeing and consideration by the programme committee. If accepted this paper will additionally be
included in the proceedings. It is essential however that a brief paper is also submitted in the format above and
focussing on the single core issue to be introduced for discussion.
