Urban Dynamics Model

Post by Eric Wolstenholme Eric.Wolstenho »

Hi all,

As many of you know my colleagues and I are involved in a growing number of
studies in public services in the UK. To date this has largely been in
health and social care.

However, I have recently been asked to review research on the use of SD
for analysing urban regeneration.

I wondered if anyone knew if Jay's original models on urban dynamics had
been recreated in Ithink or Powersim or if anyone had developed
different SD models for analysing urban regeneration in recent years.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Best wishes,

Eric Wolstenholme

I translated the model from the Dynamo commands as foind in Dr.
Forrester's book. There is a flaw in it somewhere that I have not yet
tracked down. I suspect that it is in one for the table functions or in
one of the logarithmic functions. It produces data slightly different than
the original model. If you would like the model, drop me a note and I will
send it along. I would be willing and interested in working with you to
tracking down the flaw.

Urban Dynamics Model

Eric

I have developed a model based on Forrester's original, but incorporating
transport networks, and with a multi-zonal representation of the modelled
area. It tracks households, people, houses, businesses, jobs, business
infrastructure and (some of the) transport activity. It's been used on
several studies, most recently Merseyside (that one is keeping me awake at
nights right now).

I gave a paper on this at the 2003 Boston conference, or there is a technical
paper on our website here:

Eric,

One of our master students, Peter Sanders from the Netherlands, created and
analysed an urban dynamics model with 16 separate areas. Thus he was able to
analyse the effects of local policies on surrounding areas. The model was
written in Vensim and he presented his work at the 2004 conference in Oxford.

My best
