For several years we have been presenting a segment of Canada's Defence
Resources Management Course (DRMC, twice per year)) offered to Senior
Military Officers and their civilian Federal Government counterparts. Our
course (A Systems Approach to Resource Management) has consistently been one
of the highest ranked segments of this 2 week program, even though it
employs only examples from ""civvy street"".
At our client's request, we are currently involved in redesigning the course
to give it much more of a military flavour and are actively looking for case
studies and/or real-life examples of systems archetypes at play in Military
Operations.
Any leads, examples or pointers to available references in the field would
be greatly appreciated.

There has been a wealth of SD applications to defence based issues
from capability acquisition, combat performance, manpower planning
etc. Geoff Coyle undertook a lot of pioneering work in this area
(see for example Coyle RG ""System dynamics applied to defense
analysis - a literature survey"", Defense Analysis 12, pp141-160.
At HVR, we have undertaken a large number of SD based studies for
UK Ministry of Defence (MoD)and its agencies but also have carried
out projects in Canada. The latter included qualitative mapping a
nd quantitative simulation of deployment and sustainability of
international operations. These were used to assess readiness levels.
A review of some other defence work by us is in the JORS special
edition on SD - Journal of Operational Research Vol 50, No 4 pp
372-382.
SD's application to assessing operating and support costs of complex
military systems has also been successful. Work with UK MoD and US
DoD can be found at http://www.oscamtools.com
Hope this is of use to you and others. A number of us will be convening
for a military roundtable at the Boston conference and there have been
papers presented over the years particularly from Norway, US and UK.
