Hospital Mergers

Colleagues ..

I live in a city in the UK (Bristol) where the major health authority is
planning to merge two very large hospitals currently situated on
separate sites .. separated by over 8 miles (12 kms). The resulting
hospital will be an expansion of an existing one. While both hospitals
have common facilities, one of them has a European reputation for
dealing with accidents of all kinds. Arguably, it has the best burns
unit in the UK. This hospital is very close to a very busy intersection
of motorways/freeways, as well as handling large volumes of industrial
accidents. The merger will mean the complete closure of this hospital
and the transfer of unique services to the other.

You can imagine that many of us are concerned we will lose these
important facilities. But bureaucracy is bureaucracy, and they will
only listen to reasoned arguments - if they are even going to listen!

Have any SDS members/practitioners had similar experiences, or has
anyone researched and written a paper regarding the merger of multiple
hospitals presenting arguments based on SD theory. I would be grateful
to hearoff-line.

Thank you.
