Promotion for Dr Bob Cavana

Many of you will know Dr Bob Cavana through his tireless work for the SD Society, and for organising the conference that was held in Wellington, New Zealand.

I am delighted to be able to tell you that he has now been elevated to the rank of Reader at the Victoria University of Wellington. A Readership is a very ancient title in British Universities and is also used in some Commonwealth countries. It is granted very sparingly, and only for outstanding and sustained research of international standing. It used to mean that a Reader only had to read the subject, and carried no other duties except giving an occasional lecture, but only if the Reader felt like it. Those were the days!

Bob is to be most warmly congratulated on this formidable achievement, which equates to a research chair in North America.

He will probably kill me for sending this, but he's too modest to tell you himself.
