Folks,
Adrian asked about system dynamics models of drifting sands and coastal erosion. This topic was addressed by Ruth and Pieper in their Winter 1994 article in the System Dynamics Review. They described a Stella model to simulate ground cover, erosion and elevation on a cell by cell basis for a coastal marsh on Cape Cod (south of Boston). The model operated with links to a GIS by the Army Corp of Engineers called GRASS, their Georgraphical Resoures Analysis Support System.
The challenge in such cellular modeling projects is making the links between system dynamics and GIS in a convenient manner. A more recent paper addresses this issue. The award-winning paper by Bendor and Metcalf (at the 2005 Conference in Boston) describes a spatial/dynamic model of the spread of the Asian Beetle through forests in the midwest. Their approach made use of SME, the spatial modeling environment developed at the Univ. of Vermont.
