ANNOUNCE Post-doc Position through USC

Hi Everyone,

A note via John Sterman.

Bob Eberlein
----------------------------

Below a post-doc opportunity combining system dynamics, behavioral
economics, and other methods to study how communities respond to
disasters, both natural and man-made (e.g., terrorist attacks). I met
with Bill Burns last week; they have developed some preliminary system
dynamics models of dynamic risk perception processes and are seeking
people to develop these further. Could be quite exciting work.

John Sterman
-----------------

1. Attached is a description of the postdoctoral position at CREATE we spoke
about. For the right person, from my observation of post-docs at CREATE, this
position provides a rich research experience and a chance to tackle some
challenging and relevant problems.

2. In addition to this full-time position at CREATE, Paul Slovic, Adam Rose
(CREATE) and I have some NSF funds to offer a post-doc 1-2 months per year for 2
years. Essentially we are trying to model community response to different types
of disasters and estimate the economic impacts of the same. The challenge is to
introduce behavioral input into a general equilibrium economic modeling (CGE)
framework. For this reason we also would like someone with some background in
behavioral economics as well as some understanding of system dynamics modeling
if
possible. Besides level of funding, what's different about our offer is that we
don't require they come to CREATE to work with us on our project. Those
interested can contact me at william_burns@sbcglobal.net or 760.533.5651.

Thanks for your help with this, we really appreciate it.

Postdoctoral Position Offering

Opportunity. Opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team of researchers on
a variety of research projects relating to the economic modeling and analysis of
terrorist attacks and other types of disasters. This would be a full-time
position for 1-2 years.

Background. Need to have familiarity with behavioral economics/risk analysis and
be willing to come to CREATE (DHS Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of
Terrorism Events-USC) for 1-2 years.

Description. CREATE is an interdisciplinary national research center based at
the
University of Southern California in Los Angeles and funded by the Department of
Homeland Security. For more details visit http://www.usc.edu/create.

“The CREATE program brings together some of the finest scholars and researchers
in the fight against terrorism. Using some of the most advanced models and tools
available, these remarkable people are helping us to assess the risk of
terrorism, gauge its economic consequences, and propose and evaluate strategies
for making us safer and more secure. It is precisely this type of cost-benefit,
risk-management approach that is needed to help prevent the kind of catastrophic
attack we sustained on 9/11.”

Secretary Michael Chertoff, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, during a
speech
at USC on July 20, 2007

Applications must include a letter indicating the candidate’s area of
