QUERY Addressing G8 Summit Issues

Post by Ralf Lippold <ralf_lippold@we »

Hi everybody,

in his talk ""System dynamics - the next fifty years"" Jay W. Forrester is clearly
stating (page 361 of System Dynamics Review Vol. 23, No. 2/3) that we ""must
focus
debate in newspapers, blogs, ... Have there been any such since Urban Dynamics,
World Dynamics, and the Limits to Growth?"".

The G8 Summit in Japan that is taking place from the 7th of July on seems to be
the ground we haven't even -to my knowledge- touched as the SD Community yet.
You
can find info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/34th_G8_summit.

How come as these folks really are struggling especially around energy, food and
climate questions and still can't get down to reasonable policies?

Wouldn't this be a fair -if rather big- issue to put our combined knowledge in?
It -in my eyes- calls almost for bolder action and I wonder whether there
couldn't be made connections to the leaders from the SD Community. Could be a
well suited topic for a special session in world café like style during the
conference in Athens - even though we are already packed with lots of
interesting
sessions.

The problems of the world really lay at hand and yet it needed a chat with
someone in New Zealand to be reminded of the G8 Summit and its implications on
the world as a whole. Why not grab what we really have in our own hands and
where
everybody can contribute?

Best regards

Ralf

For my own part. In a most likely futile effort, I mailed a letter on May=
9,
2008 to the Japanese Minister of the Environment regarding the G8 that s=
aid,
in-part.

""The adoption of disciplined scientific methodologies such as Structural
Analysis and the utilization of Systems Dynamics (SD) modeling can provid=
e
the means to successfully transition from the current stalemate of unreal=
ized
solution proposals, to the rapid and successful implementation of
sustainability solutions that are ever more critically needed.
I would urge the Ministry to utilize its considerable influence and resou=
rces
to pursue the utilization of these scientific tools to facilitate the G8,=
and
indeed the entire international community, in overcoming the current
roadblocks that are literally risking the future of human civilization. ""

Based on the contents of the G8 reports my futile effort was for naught. =
But
then again, it isn't the first time! :-)
