Introducing Ventity beta 1

Post by tomfid »

This forum is for support and discussion of the Ventity beta.

Ventity is new simulation software for complex systems.

Ventity has been through internal alpha testing, and will be released in a limited beta test, concurrent with the 2015 System Dynamics Conference. Very shortly, we'll be providing a download link to conference attendees and previously registered beta testers.

A broader beta release will follow later this year. Please bear with us; our goal is to get this right and provide good support to our testers. To borrow a railroad phrase from a colleague, we want to send the steam to the wheels, not the whistle.

Key benefits are:

Modularity and object orientation, supporting sectors and complex agents, without arcane arrays
Dynamic creation and deletion of model components and relationships
Support for team collaboration, model federation and submodels
Advanced graphics and a new, clean look
Just like Vensim, a pure declarative language (no programming)

Ventity doesn't replace Vensim; we will continue to develop the two products in parallel, with complementary feature sets and interoperability where possible. Ventity licensing for existing Vensim Pro and DSS users will be favorable.

You can watch a Ventity preview here: http://vensim.com/vensims-new-partner-ventity/

There’s a Ventity poster and more detailed white paper in the SD conference proceedings:

Could you please refer those interested to a document or discussion of Ventity & Vensim interoperability ?
Can a Vensim model be loaded into Ventity and modified for the different functionality?
Does the Vensim model thus loaded into Ventity have restrictions in terms of its functionality ?
Thanks,

Mike

There isn't any document, or interoperability, yet.

We will create a translator for Vensim models to Ventity, most likely via XMILE. Simple models and components should translate ~100%.

We don't expect full two-way translation of models to be practical. Coming from Vensim, it doesn't make sense to move a complex, subscripted model to Ventity without modifying it to take advantage of the new architecture. Coming from Ventity, a model that uses dynamically-changing structure or sparse matrices will be difficult or impossible to express in Vensim.

This is why Ventity is not replacing Vensim any time soon. Vensim will continue to evolve and remain the tool of choice for many problems.
