System Dynamics in Software Engineering

Post by Alex Rodrigues »

Dear Andrea,

During my recent PhD research, entitled "System Dynamics in Project
Management: an integrated methodology within the traditional framework",
I have carried out extensive theoretical and practical work in the
application of System Dynamics project models to software projects, in
and integrated manner with the traditional network-based tools (so
called PERT/CPM).

You may find further information in the following papers:

(1) Rodrigues A. and Bowers J (1996) System Dynamics in Project
Management: a comparative analysis with traditional methods. System
Dynamics Review. Vol 12 (2)

(2) Rodrigues A. and Bowers J (1996) The role of System Dynamics in
Project Management. International Journal of Project Management. Vol 14
(4)

In these two above, you will find an introduction to the subject and an
extensive review of SD models and practical applications to Project
Management.

(3) Rodrigues A. and Williams T. (1997) System Dynamics in Software
Project Management: towards the development of a formal integrated
framework. European Journal of Information Systems. Vol 6, pp 51-56.

(4) Rodrigues A. and Williams T. (1998) System Dynamics in Project
Management: assessing the impacts of client behaviour on project
performance. Forthcoming in the Journal of the Operational Research
Society, January issue.

Here you will find more practical discussions based on a case-study
within a major software project.

Regarding the application of SD to major programmes/projects, I would
strongly recommend you to have a look at the work being developed at
Pugh-Roberts Associates, since 1980. Among others, I would recommend the
following papers:

(i) Cooper K (1980) Naval ship production: a claim settled and a
framework build. Interfaces. Vol 10 (6).

(ii) Cooper K (1993) The Rework Cycle: why projects are mismanaged.
PMNETwork. February.

(iii) Cooper K and Mullen T (1993) Swords and Plowshares: the rework
cycles of defense and commercial software development projects. American
Programmer. Vol 6 (5).

(iv) Lyneis J and Pugh III A (1996) Automated vs "Hand" calibration of
System Dynamics models -- an experiment with a simple project model. In
Proc. of 1996 System Dynamics Conference, Boston, USA.

Finally, I would also recommend the following readings:

NATO ARW 951491 (1996) Managing and Modelling Complex Projects:
Netherlands, Kuwer Publishers.

Rodrigues A (1997) SYDPIM -- A System Dynamics-based Project-Management
Integrated Methodology. In Proc. of 1997 System Dynamics Conference,
Istanbul, Turkey.

ACKERMANN, F., Eden, C. and Williams, T. (1997) A persuasive approach to
Delay and Disruption - using "mixed methods". Interfaces. Vol 27 (2).

Williams T et al (1995) The effects of design changes and delays on
project costs. Journal of the Operational Research Society. Vol 46 (7).

Ford D and Sterman J (1998) Dynamic modeling of the product development
process. Forthcoming in System Dynamics Review.

I sincerely hope this helps to answer your queries. Please, contact me
if you wish to discuss this subject further, as I will be glad to
contribute.

Best regards,

Alexandre
