PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS
International Conference on
Systems Thinking in Management
(Incorporating the First Australasian Conference on
System Dynamics and Sixth Australia and New Zealand Systems Conference)
"Dynamics of Theory and Practice"
8th-10th November 2000
Hosted by:
Deakin University
Waterfront Campus, Geelong, Victoria, Australia
Many businesses struggle to establish, maintain or enhance a competitive
edge. Systems thinking and dynamics have emerged as important disciplines
for managerial problem solving and decision making.=20
This conference offers both practitioners and the academic community the
opportunity to share the latest ideas in the application of systems
thinking and practice to management. The applications of systems thinking
discussed will address the sets of interacting problems faced by managers
of all kinds, and at all levels, every working day - ranging from the
technical to the organizational, from social to political, incorporating
concerns about the environment, society, information management and the
role of organizations and the motivation of individuals.
THEME
The ICSTM 2000 theme is "Dynamics of Theory and Practice". The conference
organizers welcome contributions that draw upon contemporary developments
in systems theory, and contemporary experiences in the practice of
systems management.
Further, the conference will support examination of the dynamic link
between theory and practice - for example, the application of
developments in systems thinking and system dynamics to support
managerial problem solving/decision-making.=20
The conference theme will be addressed from a number of perspectives,
which include:
action learning and research;
adaptive and strategic planning;
chaos and complexity;
cognitive processes in systems thinking and learning;=20
community and soft operational research;
cybernetics;
hard, soft and critical systems;
information systems implementation and management;=20
management science methodologies;=20
management strategy for information technology;
organisational learning and knowledge management;=20
philosophy of systems thinking;
project management systems;
quality management systems;
sustainability;
system dynamics modelling;=20
systems in education; and
systems methodologies.
THE AUDIENCE
It is anticipated that the conference will attract a mixture of industry,
government, and academic delegates. Presentations will focus on
addressing the interests and needs of this diverse audience. Practical
applications guided by good theory, success stories, learning
experiences, and integrative approaches will be delivered in plenary
sessions and specialized themes. Birds of a Feather sessions, panel
sessions addressing topical themes, and tutorial/workshop sessions in
emerging systems approaches, will also be available to delegates.
You are hereby invited to submit abstract(s) of paper(s) you would be
available to present. Abstracts should be submitted together with a
completed "Registration of Interest Form" as available below, to the
address indicated.
All abstracts will be reviewed for suitability, and if suitable, authors
will be invited to submit their full paper, which will be sent to two
referees for double blind peer review. Abstracts should not be more than
250 words. They should provide sufficient detail to indicate clearly the
industry or research context and objectives, selected methodology or case
studies, and the final outcome/lessons for enterprises and policy
developers.=20
Potential contributors should note the conference will be a mix of
industry practitioners, academics and public sector representatives and
should address the style and content of their paper accordingly. The full
contact details (postal address, telephone, fax and e-mail) of the
corresponding author and the individual(s) who will present the paper if
accepted, should appear on all abstracts submitted. Abstract and
subsequent paper submissions must comply with the following schedule:

<color><param>0000,0000,ffff</param>About Geelong
</color>
Geelong is located on Corio Bay, 75 kilometers south west of Melbourne
and is a city of just under 200 000 people. Geelong, as Victorias
largest provincial city is the center of a region of over a quarter of a
million people. Geelong is a large industrial city with one of the
largest ports in Australia. Geelong is "The Pivot" for commerce for the
rich pastoral areas of the Western District of Victoria and the central
west. It is the gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast and
the Great Ocean Road.=20
The temperature in November ranges from 14C to 24C. Days are typically
sunny, bright, but can be hot at times. For further information about
Geelong go to http://www2.deakin.edu.au/geelong/.
It is intended that the conference format will include opportunity for
delegates to appreciate some of the culture and history of Geelong and
surrounding regions. In particular, it is noted that the conference is
timed to follow immediately the running of the Melbourne Cup, the most
significant horse race in the Southern Hemisphere. Delegates may like to
take the opportunity to experience the atmosphere surrounding the
Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, before and after the conference.
