Hello,
Is any one aware of system dynamics applications to the telecom
industry,
for example, to explore the growth dynamics of this industry due to the
internet, and what telecom technologies offer the best potential for
sustained growth?
Any hints or references would be appreciated.
Regards,
Luis

Luis,
I work for Mercator Partners, a strategy consulting firm that does a lot of
work in telecom. In January we built a large model for a consortium bidding
for 3rd generation wireless spectrum in the UK. We used system dynamics for
2 reasons: 1) It is a rich modeling methodology that we felt was better
suited for modeling the diffusion of a technology still in its infancy whose
success is largely determined by its perceived value vs. competing
technologies and by the dynamics of customer "churn". 2) It is a great tool
for building consensus about assumptions and system structure among a large
group with diverse opinions. We have applied this model for several other
clients with the same basic question in the past few months. We are now
internally taking the model further to explore various pricing strategies
for network operators. I would be happy to continue this discussion
off-line if you are interested.
