For those who are interested in attending this gathering, a booking form is attached to this message. However, if you are unable to open this document, then a booking form can also be obtained from: Theodora Kennedy Conference Organiser 83, Stone Park Avenue Beckenham Kent BR3 3LU Tel: 020 8650 8327 Fax: 0870 127 0906 E-mail: uksds@clara.co.uk Dr Susan Howick Dept of Management Science University of Strathclyde 40 George Street Glasgow G1 1QE UK Phone: +44 (0)141 548 3798 Fax: +44 (0)141 552 6686 e-mail:susan@mansci.strath.ac.uk UK Chapter of the International System Dynamics Society 2002 Conference, Harrogate 7th - 8th February 2002 Annual Gathering The UK Chapter of the System Dynamics Society has grown in strength this year. Two meetings have been held in the UK and the Chapter has been approved to host the 2004 conference of the International System Dynamics Society. This will be held at Keble College Oxford. This letter is to invite you to the next meeting of the Chapter which will be the Annual 2002 Gathering on Thursday and Friday 7th - 8th February 2002, at the White Hart Hotel in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Lunch will be available on February 7th, the meeting starts at 1.30 pm and participants can leave after breakfast on Friday, or after dinner on Thursday. Who Can Come? The meeting is open to anyone with an interest in system dynamics; you DO NOT have to be a member of the System Dynamics Society. What Will Happen? The meeting this year has been given a new and innovative format. Our intention is to give members a flavour of some state of the art applications in system dynamics AND an opportunity to question and learn from experts in the field across a wide spectrum of issues. We will have four keynote speakers, all prominent practitioners of system dynamics who will each provide a brief overview of one of their recent high-profile projects. This will be followed by an "applications clinic" where both the speakers and other prominent practitioners from the system dynamics community will be available in an informal setting to facilitate discussions on issues of interest to participants. Members will be invited to indicate their own interests in the final joining instructions. The "applications clinic" will also reconvene for one hour just before dinner so members may carry discussions through to an amicable conclusion over food and drink. We have pleasure in announcing the following speakers and presentation titles (brief biographical information on the speakers is included in an appendix to this letter): · Jim Lyneis: Corporate Planning in Mastercard. · Steven Kerr: System Dynamics in BP. · Denis Sherwood: Introducing System Dynamics into Large Organisations · Steven Curram: System Dynamics in Support of Risk Assessment in the transmission of CJD. As before we expect to present the UK Chapter Award for the best student project (undergraduate & MSc, not doctorate level) in system dynamics at UK Universities, generously sponsored by HVR-CSL and Cognitus. The winner will receive a cash prize and give a short presentation of his or her work. If you teach system dynamics and have student work you would like to submit, please contact Professor Alfredo Moscardini at cs0amo@cis.sunderland.ac.uk who will give you all the details. Also contact him if you are a student and want to find out how to get your work considered. Finally, there will be a short business meeting of the UK Chapter, and all participants can attend this meeting. It is not restricted to members of the System Dynamics Society. Is There A Social Side? Yes! After the meeting there will be a drinks reception, followed by dinner (no speeches) and a cash bar. What Does It Cost And How Do I Book? Please see the attached form for details. Book early! We are aiming for more people than could come to previous meetings, but numbers will still be restricted so that we dont lose the personal touch. If you cant come, or book too late to get a place, but want to keep in touch there is a fee of £30 for a years membership of the Chapter, which includes a copy of the view foils or PowerPoint slides used by the speakers. I hope that you will come for what promises to be an interesting and fun day. Eric Wolstenholme President, UK Chapter of the System Dynamics Society.
