Complexity and Philosophy Workshop - Calling Notice

Post by "Kurt Richardson" »

Dear All

My name is Kurt Richardson and I sometimes post to both the complex-M and complex-science discussion groups, but mainly I am a lurker if you like. As you can see from the calling notice below I am trying to organise a Complexity and Philosophy workshop for this July. The workshop is filling up fast so I wanted to contact some of the list members directly so that those of you I feel would have an interest in the workshop would get an opportunity to attend if you so desired. My sincerest apologies for not personalising the email but there are quite a few of you. As such the mailing does come across as spamming... I hope you wont see it that way (if so I would be disappointed but more than willing to remove your address from my list). Please also accept my apologies if you have received this notice via another route - please let me know and Ill try my best to not to let it happen again.

Anyway, bye for now... I hope to meet some of you in July.

Kind regards

Kurt

Institute for the Study of Coherence and Emergence
Workshop on Complexity and Philosophy
First Calling Notice
29-30 July 2002, Courtyard Marriott, Norwood, MA (Near Boston)

Call for Participants

I am writing to you today to inform you about the upcoming two-day Complexity and Philosophy workshop to be held this summer at Norwood, MA and hosted by the Institute for the Study of Coherence and Emergence (http://www.isce.edu). The aim of this meeting is to explore the considerable philosophical implications of the fledgling science of complex systems.

Call for Papers

Attendees are encouraged to present papers to the assembled participants. Suggested topics include:

· Status of knowledge regarding complex systems
· Relationship between linear and nonlinear philosophies
· Complexity-based ethics
· Frameworks for the analysis of complex systems
· Complex limits to theories of everything
· Status of scientific knowledge
· Limits to understanding complex systems
· Complexity and the social sciences
· Legitimacy of the complexity perspective

All paper submissions will be considered for publication in the international journal Nonlinear Dynamics, Psychology and Life Sciences (depending upon suitability), and/or publication in an edited book of papers to be published by Quorum Press. All papers will be considered for publication even if time cannot be found for the papers to be presented at the conference itself (the emergent properties of such an event may at times dictate the proceedings!).
