Dear SD Community,
Im a Independent Degree Concentration student at University of North
Carolina at Asheville studying law and policy system dynamics; and the need
to learn these dynamics anew in American culture. For example, Brown vs.
Board of Education stimulated systemic change leading to the Civil Rights
Act, and effects continuing today.
Also, the War on Drugs, and the international narcotics trade alone, has
created numerous intertwined and/or parallel influences on constitutional
and civil rights law, economics, and society. The Tulia, TX False Mass Drug
Conspiracy case acts as a Petri dish of these conflicts.
I want any advice. As one can see from my examples, law and policy system
dynamics has a lot to offer in terms of organizing major contemporary civil
issues. I feel law and policy relationships need to be mapped out for the
public and critical issues described thus.
Any thoughts on books, articles, and related analysis, would be greatly
appreciated. Is there any SD studies occurring in this direction? I¹m
all alone here.
Thank you,
From: Grant Millin <grantmillin@earthlink.net>

Law and Policy System Dynamics
Grant,
Three suggestions:
1) Prod David Andersen and George Richardson to compile a (likely
multi-volume) book of their decades of public policy applications of System
Dynamics. Barring that, Ill bet a Google search would turn up plenty.
2) Check out Jay Forresters Urban Dynamics, my and Louis Alfelds
Introduction to Urban Dynamics and the two Readings in Urban Dynamics
3) See if Barnes and Noble or Amazon have a used copy of The Persistent
Poppy. I believe Gary Hirsch and Edward B. (i.e., "Ed") Roberts were two of
the authors. Its a model of the drug "market" and enforcement mechanisms,
effects, and side effects.

Law and Policy System Dynamics
Whilst not precisely in the area you want, we did do some studies for
the Australian Land & Water Corp using qualitative systems thinking to
identify key issues for regulation and natural resource management, and
directions for reform. One of them is on the download section of our
website at http://www.profitfoundation.com.au.
We also have a later study (currently being rewritten into a book) on
institutional underpinnings. If the material is close to where you want
to go I can happily send you an embargoed version.
regards
Paul Martin
