Is anyone familiar with systems dynamics models for higher education? I am
aware of Virtual University but wondered if there were any others.

Systems Dynamics Models for Higher Education
With your question, are you probing primarily the learning part of higher
education or the business side of higher education? I have been associated
with a state university facing state appropriation cutbacks, combined with
significant tuition increases. Administrative, academic, and student
resources are being impacted significantly. I am interested in both the
business side of the system and the impact on educational effectiveness of
the business decisions.
Additionally, our state structure is being redesigned to encourage community
colleges to be the primary source of education for first and second-year
students, with the universities completing their education in years three
and four. What models exist that cross institution boundaries and consider
broader systems?
Thank you for your consideration.

Systems Dynamics Models for Higher Education
In the mid-1990s, several colleagues and myself worked on a medium-sized
system dynamics model of higher educational institutions. An early version
of this model is described in the following paper from the 1994 ISDC:
Frances, C., Alstyne, M. V., Ashton, A., & Hochstettler, T. (1994). Using
System Dynamics Technology to Improve Planning and Budgeting for Higher
Education: Results in Arizona and Houston, Texas. In 1994 International
System Dynamics Conference, Social and Public Policy (pp. 66). Sterling,
Scotland: System Dynamics Society.
This model was later expanded and refined by Hank Taylor, Mark Smith and
myself for several clients (including the California State University
System, University System of New Hampshire, and University of Alabama at
Birmingham). A packaged microworld version of the model with a simple UI
was also created by Shaun Kaneshiro. The company which sold these models
(Cambridge Decision Dynamics) is now defunct, and I believe that the models
have reverted to the public domain. If you were interested in examining the
models in more detail, I can confirm their public availability and provide a
copy thereof.

Systems Dynamics Models for Higher Education
Hello,
There has been similar queries in the past. I am pasting our typical reply
(apologies to those who have read this before):
We have an interactive simulation game for university management (UNIGAME)
here at Bogazici. We can send it free for personal educational
esearch use.
Please contact us if you want. The primary author of the product is Vedat
Diker, now at SUNY-Albany.
And here is the basic reference:
A Dynamic Simulation Game for Strategic University Management (with Vedat
Diker), Simulation and Gaming ,
Vol.31, No.3, September 2000.

We have a model that models the National higher education system of Turkey,
starting with high school graduation, the central placement exam, placement,
enrollment and finally graduation...
But the model is quite specific tu Turkey, the main issue being 1.5 million
taking the central exam and only about 250K being placed. A large portion of
the unsuccessful group take over and over again.
Part of the stock flow structure is of course generic/standard and can be
applied to any country. BUT a most difficult/interesting part of the model was
the formulation of the "central placement exam", taking as inputs various types
of student groups, depending on their backgrounds and preferences and placing
them (some of them) in different programs.
You can take a look at the project at: http://www.ie.boun.edu.tr/labs/sesdyn/
under projects.
