Dear Colleagues:
I’m developing a new course, A Systems Approach to Crisis Preparation and
Building Organizational Resilience, and am looking for any materials or class
session ideas any of you might have, as well as any research, models, or
general information on the topic.
It’s a Masters level course offered through the Center for Organizational
Dynamics at the University of Pennsylvania. The principal purpose of the course
is to prepare students so that they and the groups and organizations they lead
can successfully weather organizational crises and adversities.
Some themes I would like to explore include:
• Planning so as to avoid, mitigate, or, if necessary, manage a crisis
• How to audit vulnerabilities (and crisis preparedness)
• Models of resilience
• What to do what to do before, during, and after a crisis
• How to build resilience into a system
• How to inoculate to protect against depression and demise
• How to identify what is most important and how to safeguard it
Thank you in advance for any materials or suggestions.
Steve

Crisis preparation and building organizational resilience
Steve,
<P>
You might consider Halls article in ASQ (1976 probably)
that explores how Saturday Evening Post failed. Also,
since you speak about organizational resilience, it might
be useful to look at Sastrys model in ASQ (1997 probably).
I would love to receive a final version of the syllabus,
once you have put it together.
Regards,
Abhijit

Crisis preparation and building organizational resilience
Steve, just a quick note in response to your request. It seems to me that
one of the most relevant topics to include, from an SD modeling perspective,
might be called "How to avoid creating a crisis" since many organizational
crises are of endogenous origin -- often the result of trying to fix or
avoid the very crisis that is created. Relevant topics here could include
many of the "system archetypes" and what happens when one does the obvious
thing to try to "fix" the situation.
