To what extent has system dynamics modeling been applied to the behavior of
watersheds and the effects of development and protection initiatives?
Pointers to any studies or other resources greatly appreciated.

Fred,
There was a thread about SD and hydrology in April of this year.
You may also want to find a copy of
System Simulation for Regional Analysis An Application to River Basin
Planning by H.R. Hamilton, et. al., MIT Press 1969

System dynamics have been applied to understand watershed processes as well as
global water management issues. The following articles could be useful:

Hydrological Processes, 16, 2645-2666.
Simonovic,S. P., Fahmy, H. and El-Shorbagy, A. (1997) The Use of
Object Oriented Modelling for Water Resources Planning in
Egypt, Water Resources Management, 11, 243-261.
Ahmad,S. and Simonovic, S. P. (2000) System Dynamics Modeling of

Related to Hamilton's book is a very interesting volume entitled 'Causal
Inference in Non-Experimental Research'; I think that the author's name was
Blalock.
I am sure that there is at least one valuable PhD in that topic.
