variable subscript dimension?

Does anyone know whether there is a way to adjust the dimension of a subscript (e.g., change from a length of 20 to a length of 30) through use of a variable? Or, do you always have to define the length within the subscript definition itself (e.g., subscript dimension defined as {sub1-sub20})? It would be nice if I could simply assign the dimension of the subscript (in this case 20) with a variable rather than having to manually change it in the subscript definition, but I don't know whether that is possible.

Subcripts have to be defined in the subscript equation - they can't be dynamic.
