This is an answer to Bob Chase asking for ideas for his "ongoing study
group to learn systems skill."
It might be useful to Bob and others to know about a workbook I am
helping to create called "Road Maps: A Guide to Learning System
Dynamics." This book is being written under the guidance of Professor
Jay Forrester here at MIT by a select group of undergraduates. The
possible target audience is anyone who would like to learn system
dynamics in a "hands-on" way. For example, the first chapter is made
up of papers about uses of system dynamics selected from a number of
authors. Then Road Maps, Part 2, leads the reader through an
introduction to STELLA modeling software on a Macintosh and some
beginning modeling exercises. So right away, the reader becomes
active in computer modeling. At this time, five sections are finished
(although we keep finding new ways to make them better).
Copies of Road Maps are available from The Creative Learning Exchange
as follows. Later this year, sections will be available on the
Internet.
