SD and Racism

Post by GBHirsch@aol.com »

The Pugh-Roberts work on affirmative action programs at Polaroid was done by
Alan Frohman and Jack Pugh at Pugh-Roberts and Henry Morgan from Polaroid.
It was published originally in the Proceedings of the 1973 Summer Computer
Simulation Conference and reprinted in Ed Roberts book on Managerial
Applications of System Dynamics which I believe may be currently available
from Productivity Press in Portland, Ore.

SD and Racism

Post by Bill Braun »

Does anyone have any information on the use of system dynamics to model
racism. Primarily I am looking for a model that seeks to explain its
dynamcis; if the model also focuses on or includes intervention
strategies, that is also welcome.

Thank you.

The only work I know of was done MANY years ago (late 60s early 70s?) by
Pugh-Roberts people for Polaroid Corp. It dealt with equal opportunity
issues and it was published but the reference escapes me now. Try the SD
bibliography or maybe some of the original P-R people will remember it. Good
luck.

SD and Racism

Post by Robert Glitz »

Hi Bill,

We just finished an SD model to study diversity levels in an
organization (actually, within our org, the Air National Guard) and it
relates various intervention strategies to their effect on levels of
minorities and females.

It doesnt address racism directly, but some of the effects can be seen
in the models consequences. I always wished that we did address the
racism question head-on, but we looked at a more general view of HR
questions instead.

In any case, youre welcome to the model. Its done in Powersim and
runs on the Powersim run-time version (free) just fine.

Many thanks to George, Gary Sharon and Joel for the references. As it
turns out, Ed Roberts book is sitting on my bookshelf and I did not recall
that it addresses the issue, at least in part.

Thanks again to Robert for the model.

Best regards,

Bill Braun
