Anurag....
Very interesting issue. Implicates integrating SD and DA (decision analysis),
among other concerns, which I have not seen addressed on this list to date.
Cheers......Bill Buchanan

System dynamics for supply chain managament
Hi Anurag,
Given the fact that Industrial Dynamics is probably the first good study
of a real multi-company supply chain in action it is strange indeed that
in the world of supply chain research so much attention is paid to
conventional OR/MS type of analysis and so little to SD analysis. And
even fewer research projects attempt to combine the two.
In the first category (SD for SCM but without conventional OR/MS) UK
researchers Towill and Main have been quite active, see e.g.
Towill, D.R., Main, M.M., Wilkner, J. (1992) : "Industrial Dynamics
Simulation Models in the Design of Supply Chains", International Journal
of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management, 22, 5.
In the second category I personally have had quite some good
experiences. What me and my partners in crime have found especially
fruitful is to use a system dynamics model for a good broad analysis of
overall system behavior and then to apply specific OR/MS techniques on
certain problematic areas.
For instance, I once used a discrete simulation model to analyse
detailed order desk operations after identifying in a system dynamics
model of the integral supply chain that speed in this particular part of
the overall supply chain would be crucial for overall performance (c.f.
Akkermans 1995).
Perhaps I should mention that we are more or less campaigning here in
Europe to get the Production and Operations Management area as a whole
to pay more attention to SD and what it can offer to them.
Here are some specific references:
