SYSTEMS DYNAMICS APPROACHES FOR ADDRESSING FISHERIES ISSUES

Post by "Richard G. Dudley" »

We are hoping to go ahead with a session on Fisheries and Systems
Dynamics at the American Fishery Society meeting in North Carolina which
takes place at the end of August. I have already received some
proposals for presentations, but there is still room for additional
speakers.

If you would like to make a presentation at this session, and you
presentation fits within the scope of the proposed session (see below)
then please send me the title and brief description of your
proposed presentation.

I need to finalize the tentative list of speakers before
FRIDAY 4 DECEMBER so that I can send the proposal to the American
Fishery Society.

If you are interested in making a presentation please contact me
_immediately_. (A full abstract is NOT necessary at this time.)

Proposed TITLE of session:
SYSTEMS DYNAMICS APPROACHES FOR ADDRESSING FISHERIES ISSUES

Proposed DESCRIPTION of the session:

Solutions to increasingly complex fisheries issues require tools that
enable us to examine complex systems in a clear and effective manner.
One such tool, systems dynamics, has been applied to a wide range of
complex subject areas but only occasionally to fisheries research and
management.

The field of systems dynamics grew out of engineering feedback control
systems and electronics and has emerged as a distinct field over the
past 40 years. The field gained more widespread use with the advent of
graphical modeling environments such as Stella, VenSim, and PowerSim.
While mathematical and computer modeling have long been an integral part
of fisheries management, use of system dynamics modeling in fisheries is
relatively rare.

This symposium will present examples of the application of systems
dynamics approaches to fisheries issues. Presentations by fisheries
professionals and systems dynamics specialists will examine the uses,
strengths and limitations of this approach for fisheries management,
research, and teaching.

It is believed that this session will serve the following purposes: It
will provide a forum for scientists using this approach to exchange
ideas, it will provide an introduction to this approach for those not
familiar with it, and it will encourage the application of these
approaches, where appropriate, to the solution of fisheries problems.
