Transportation and System Dynamics

Hi everybody!

In my PhD thesis Im trying to create a system dynamic model to
simulate transportation in interaction to land use. The overall main
aim of the model and the simulation process is the evaluation of
selected policy and planning measures promoting sustainability,
addressing different transportation and land use behaviour scenarios.
In that context, I am interested in any resources concerning
transportation modeling - especially the modeling of the interaction
between transportation and land use.

Thank you very much for your answers and best regards

Dear Christian,
There is a very relevant modelling project ASTRA (Assessment of Transport
Strategies) which was started as EC project few years back. The project
co-ordinator is IWW, Institute for Economic Policy Research, University of
Karlsruhe (GER). The main purpose of this project is to develop a tool for
analysing the impact of the Common Transport Policy including secondary and
long-term effects.

One of the four submodules of ASTRA model is "Regional Economics and Land
Use". Project reports are available as Deliverables D1, D2 and D3. I would
recommend you to read D3 as your starting point. Although reading all the
three would give you a better and holistic picture of the transport system.

Best of luck,
/JN

I am doing work in this area. The central idea Ive used is that transport
provides access - to jobs, to a work force, etc - and that the
attractiveness of a location for housing or business use is related to its
accessibility. I borrowed ideas from the original Forrester Urban Dynamics
model to describe the process of construction and aging of infrastructure,
using various measures of accessibility to modify Forresters attractiveness
measure.
The work is still ongoing and there is nothing published yet. However youd
do well to read Urban Dynamics - it doesnt deal with transport explicitly,
but is still very helpful.
I also know of EU funded work in thi area by other groups. The ASTRA
project, coordinated by the University of Karlsruhe might be interesting,
although the Web address I have for it nolonger seems to work
(http://iwwhp01.iww.uni-karlsruhe.de/Projekte/ASTRA/)

Good Luck

Hi John!

Thank you for your answer! Youre right with the central idea about
tranportation and accessibility. I also have to try to include this
in a certain way in my model. Whats concerning Urban Dynamics I will
have al look at this, thnaks. I know about the project ASTRA and as I
can conclude from the answers to my query, its propbably one of the
largest of the very few works done in the area of transportation and
system dynamics. So there should be place enough for any creativity
... !

All the best

Christian

Hi Christian,

besides the ASTRA project there are some other studies integrating transport
and system dynamics. One is made in Switzerland under the NFP41. It is called
MODUM and you may contact Mario Keller from infras for information.

Also our institute has developed another model, called ESCOT, for the OECD
project on Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST). With that model policies are
tested that should lead to a sustainable transport system in the year 2030
(2050). The final report should be available this summer but you are able to
download an overview paper from the 3rd European Ecological Economics Conference.
http://augenblix.wu-wien.ac.at/esee2000/

A PhD thesis on this topic has just been published by a colleague of mine
at the Nomos-Verlag in Baden-Baden: Karsten Kuchenbecker (1999) "Strategische Prognose und
Bewertung von Verkehrsentwicklungen mit System Dynamics".

Nevertheless I fully agree that there still is plenty of space for
creativity in this field.

Best regards

Wolfgang
