Dear friends,
Jay W. Forrester’s well-know publication Urban Dynamics in 1969 introduced a
new perspective on analyzing urban problems, forming a bridge between
engineering and the social sciences. The use of the system dynamics methodology
to analyze socio-economic processes in order to simulate urban development is
called urban dynamics.
My question is if there is work building on the fundaments of Urban Dynamics.
The literature I found helpful so far is:
1) Alfeld, Louis E. 1995. Urban Dynamics - The first fifty years. System
Dynamics Review 11 (3):199-217.
2) Alfeld, Louis E., and Alan K. Graham. 1976. Introduction to Urban Dynamics.
Cambridge MA: Productivity Press.
3) Forrester, Jay W. 1969. Urban Dynamics.
4) Garn, H. A., and R. H. Wilson. 1972. A Look at the Urban Dynamics. I. E. E.
E. Transactions on System Man and Cybernetics (April).
5) Graham, Alan K. 1974. Understanding Urban Dynamics: An Analysis of Garns
Interpretation. In Readings in Urban Dynamics, edited by N. J. Mass. Cambridge
MA: Productivity Press.
6) Mass, Nathaniel J., ed. 1974. Readings in Urban Dynamics. 2 vols. Vol. 1.
Cambridge MA: Productivity Press. Original edition, Wright-Allen Press and MIT
Press.
7) Schroeder, Walter W., III. 1975. Urban Dynamics and the Suburbs. In Readings
in Urban Dynamics, edited by W. W. Schroeder, III, R. E. Sweeney and L. E.
Alfeld. Cambridge MA: Productivity Press.
Schroeder, Walter W., III, Robert E. Sweeney, and Louis E. Alfeld, eds.
1975. Readings in Urban Dynamics. 2 vols. Vol. 2. Cambridge MA: Productivity
Press. Original edition, Wright-Allen Press and MIT Press.
Especially, the introduction of the spatial dimension is very interesting to
me. Considering the new possibilities of the SD software I am curious if the
the original Urban Dynamics is updated recently.
Thanks

Peter
I have used ideas from the original Urban Dynamics work to build an extended
spatial model with explicit representation of transport networks, both car
and public transport.
I gave a paper on this at the New York conference, "The Dynamic Urban Model:
Transport and Urban Development". I think you can get it via the Society,
or Ill send it direct if you prefer.
