Urban transport system dynamics

Greetings to Fellow System Dynamicists!

Wed appreciate some guidance as to sources of information on the
following problem area, where we are starting a project in
conjunction with the local municipality and regional council.

Briefly, its about our citys transportation system. Ours is
relatively small (pop 320,000), a long way from its nearest neighbour
and with a relatively low housing density, albeit with fairly tight
city planning and zoning. We need to address the proliferation of
private transport (automobiles) and the consequent continuing decline
in the use of public transport.

Parking is relatively easy in the city centre, and relatively cheap, so
motorists get the message that public transport isnt worth using.
Thats one obvious area for policy development. Obviously, we know of
many others, but would welcome the opportunity to learn from the
experience of others who may have been there before.

Obviously, the methodology(ies) to be used will need to address
issues of discouraging the use of private autos and encouraging
public transport, at the same time trying to avoid inner-city
decline. Its at the same time an issue of urban planning, transportation
planning, energy planning and economic planning - all brought
together (we hope) by a constructive SD approach. Good ideas
welcomed!

Thanks, in anticipation.
