HEAD DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE AND POLICY STUDIES

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks to fill the position of head of
the Department of Social Science and Policy Studies. The department offers
a variety of undergraduate major and minor programs of study focusing on
social and environmental policy issues, particularly those related to
technology. The department also serves WPIs mission as a comprehensive
technological university by broadly educating students both by offering
courses in economics, political science, psychology and sociology, and by
assisting in the supervision of WPIs junior year thesis project in which
students examine the interaction between society and technology.

WPI is an innovative technological university of engineering, science,
management, humanities, arts and social science with an enrollment of 2600
undergraduates and 400 full time graduate students. Situated in Worcester,
the WPI campus is located in close proximity to many of the citys major
cultural attractions, including the American Antiquarian Society, the
Worcester Art Museum and several major music performance venues. Worcester,
forty miles west of Boston, offers access to the diverse cultural and
recreational resources of New England, and provides opportunities for urban,
suburban or rural lifestyles. Worcester is also the seat of nine colleges
and universities in addition to WPI.

Members of the department share a common interest in public policy. Research
areas in the department include system dynamics modeling of social and
economic systems, cognitive processes in dynamic decision making, risk
perception and communication, learning styles and the sociology of science.
Other faculty research interests include environmental and energy policy,
resource supply and use, judicial policy making and medical economics and
technology.

The department seeks a social scientist who has an established track record
of interdisciplinary research bearing on domestic or international public
policy issues, particularly those related to technology or involving system
dynamics modeling of social policy. It is expected that the new head will
strengthen the department reputation for interdisciplinary social science
research and provide leadership in expanding our policy-oriented major and
minor programs, and in completing the development of a new graduate program
in Technology and Policy.

Nominations of, and applications from, persons with academic credentials
qualifying them for the position of full professor and head in a department
of social science should be directed to: Head Department of Social Science
and Policy Studies, Human Resources, Dept., WPI, 100 Institute Road,
Worcester, MA 01609-2280 or email
human-resources@wpi.edu.

The starting date for the position is July 1, 1997. We will begin to review
applications on December 15, 1996. Additional information regarding the
department can be found at http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Depts/SSPS.

To enrich education through diversity, WPI is an affirmative action, equal
opportunity employer.
