Balanced Scorecard meets System Dynamics

Hello everyone,

in addition to what's already in the ""SD Bibliography"" endnote file, has
anyone looked into the Balanced Scorecard topic and supported this concept
with a SD model? This means I am interested in any recent work on this
topic since 2002.

I'd like to know about a SD model for such situations of development a
dynamic Balanced Scorecard.

As well I'd like to hear about any unsolved research question within this
special field of combining Balanced Scorecard as a management accounting
approach with System Dynamics.

If you can refer me to something it will be a great help and I'll be
providing interesting feedback as I expect from my work.

best,

Paul

Read:

1. Competitve Strategy Dynamics by Kim Warren
2. The Strategy Focussed Organization by Kaplan & Norton.

Both link the Balanced Scorecard to SD.

Note: The Balanced Scorecard is not a management accounting
approach.

Also try to attend the SD conference in Oxford in July this year.
There is at least one poster presentation on this topic that I
noted - Prof Carmine Bianchi. My poster presentation will touch
on this topic as well. There have also been presentations on
this at previous conferences.

I have already made a review about this idea and a paper will be
published on the American Society forEngineering Management conference
to be held at Alexandria, Virginia, during October 20-23, 2004. The
paper has the review and a discussion of the need for SD for BSC. But
so far there are no results to show. There is also this paper that has
touched the subject:

Paul,

Please share your gleanings. In our organization we have done some
modeling, and are implementing a balanced scorecard in human resources,
but have not put much thought to the linkage or capability of one
supporting the other. I may have to think about it.

Dear friends, few days ago I posted a Query message regarding
incentives and variable remunaration modelling in system dynamics.
I havent had replies so far. I wonder whether this is because of
the lack of applications of SD to the area, or, perhaps, a
perception of unpracticality.

I think BSC modelled in SD serves as a basis for incentives and
variable remuneration policy design. I would like to invite any of
you who has been involved in projects regarding BSC-Var Remun. and
SD to share your experiences with us.

Thanks

In my research (2003) for the doctor degree I conduct a research aiming at the integration of system dynamics with the Balanced Scorecard. As a result of this research I developed a method to promote the insertion of the System Dynamics into the context of implementation of strategies with the Balanced Scorecard. This methodology intends to provide an atmosphere where the managers can stimulate the development of learning and adaptation, by using the reactive control based on past results enabled by the BSC indicators, as well as the prospection of new strategies conducted in a no-risk environment, using the modeling process and the models of the System Dynamics.

The text, originally written in Portuguese will soon be translated into English. Any way You can download the thesis at http://www.gpi.ufrj. The title in Portuguese is: Scorecard Dinâmico - Em direção a Integração da Dinâmica de Sistemas com o Balanced Scorecard (Dynamic Scorecard - Toward The Integration Of Systems Dynamics With Balanced Scorecard).

Hi All,

Try this in Google: ""dynamic scorecard"". You are going to see some
examples of that integration.

I have seen that integration for the first time in a presentation
Phil Ferneau from HPS showed me in a visit I made to HPS offices
back in 1998.

I am aware that many consulting firms and academics are aware of
this integration. Even some ERP software integrates BSC and SD.

There also exists a learning environment that could be bought
from Harvard that integrates BSC and SD.

Be well...

(1) A message from an earlier post re dynamic (balanced) scorecard:

For those of you that expressed interested here is the link to my
thesis on Dynamic Balanced Scorecards.

(2) The Harvard Business School CDROM ""Balancing the Corporate
Scorecard"" uses an iThink model as the underlying basis for the
simulation. It's a good starting point. If you can find version 1
(not the current version) you can actually access the iThink model.

There has been some great feedback to Paul's question. Thanks! I'll add to
the list a link to my dissertation research on the influence of balanced
scorecards, supported by enterprise systems, on mental models and
subsequently on organizational performance.

Thanks for the question Paul.
