Mental models, cognitive maps and causal diagrams

Hello,
I'm ""academically"" trying to understand the relationship between ""system
dynamics"" -modeling and models- and learning. I believe that different
versions of a SD model can be used to infer past learning steps, since
there is some connection between the SD model and the mental model.
However, in order to assess up to which point the ""evolution"" of the SD
model can tell something meaningful about the mental model's evolution,
I'll have to measure this evolution.
According to Doyle and Ford (""Mental model s concepts for system
dynamics research"", SDR Vol. 14 Nª 1, p. 3-29), a mental model may be
articulated (but also infuenced) by ""cognitive mapping"" (Eden).
Concerning this point, I wonder if someone can tell me of works about
""measuring"" mental model's evolution during a SD modelling effort; I'm
also interested in the question if (or up to what point) a ""causal
diagram"" can be considered as a ""congitive map"".
Thanks for all your help!
