Applications are invited for two full-time HCF Foundation PhD Scholarships in the area of Health Systems Improvement Through 'In Silico' Simulation Experiments. We are using multimethod (system dynamics, agent based and discrete event), multilevel computer simulation techniques to perform health policy experiments for the future of the Australian health system and to model the impact of Information and Communications Technology interventions on reducing medication errors.

The total scholarship support per studentship
is negotiable up to $A30,014 per year for 3 years (tax-free). Students who have already been granted postgraduate awards are particularly encouraged to apply, as negotiable top-ups are available. The successful candidates should be able to start in the first half of 2006, and should have Australian citizenship or permanent resident status. One successful applicant is expected to have an outstanding honours degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent, and an interest in applying computer simulation to design and improve Australia's future health system; a background or interest in the eclipse development environment is desirable, but not essential.

The other successful applicant will have an outstanding honours degree in health or public policy or social science (including economics or political science), with a solid background or interest in quantitative methods, object oriented design and an interest in applying computer simulation to design and improve Australia's future health system.

Each successful candidate will also have:
· Demonstrated expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods with a strong interest in learning and applying new research techniques; · Good organisational, interpersonal and teamworking skills; · Commitment to multidisciplinary teamworking; · Capacity to take responsibility for organisational and analytic tasks and deliver on time; · Excellent writing skills for drafting reports and academic papers; · A strong commitment to producing high quality academic publications; and · Experience in industry is desirable but not essential.
