Variable deletion

When I delete a variable from a model sketch, Vensim doesn't allow me to create a new variable wirh the same name, and tells me that variable already exists. How can I eliminate the variable completely so as to be able to re-include it in my model? Presently I have to erase the complete model and rebuild it. Please help me with this!

When you hit the delete button, you should see a menu saying something along the lines of
"delete ... changing model structure"
"remove from view ... do not change model structure"
"cancel"

Select the first option, this will remove the variable from the model (not just delete from the sketch).
