Geoff Coyles response is a great comfort to me.

I had thought that my ongoing inability to attach numerical values to many
of these subjective choices was purely a failing on my part. Now I realise
that the failings on my part are still there, but I need not beat myself up
about it.

What is of more importance now is to ask well if we need to model these
kinds of variables (which we do whenever the issues relate to human
behaviour), is there some way we can do so meaningfully? Are ranges the
right way to go? Is there some mechanism that can allow modelling that does
not provide over-confidence on the outcomes?

I look forward to seeing what people with real insight can make of this
thorny issue.
