Deregulation of Energy Markets

A number of North American jurisdictions have de-regulated their
electricity markets (California, Michigan, New Jersey, Ontario). Has anyone
done any modelling work on the impact of energy market de-regulation on
industrial users of electricity?

Pete Warrian was interested in the use of SD to look at the impacts of
electric deregulation on industrial users.

ENERGY 2020 has been used to look at deregulation in all 50 states and all
the Canadian provinces. It simulates industrial users by end-use for all
fuels at the 2-digit SIC level. We often run ENERGY 2020 with detailed
macroeconomic feedback to show the migration of industry as costs and
customers change.

I will send detailed information on this work directly to you.

Deregulation of Energy Markets

Apart from the very important work conducted by George Backus, other
researchers have conducted work intending to examine the consequences of
market de-regulation on industrial users of electricity using SD and
complementary approaches...Factors such as under and over capacity, price
volatility, rational energy use have an important effect on electricity
price... Derek Bunn and his group at LBS, Erik Larsen at City University
and our group in Colombia have been doing work on these issues for over 10
years in Europe and Latin America...
By and large the conclusion is that with the help of regulation industrial
consumers benefit from market liberalisation.
