Evaluating an organizations structure

Is anyone aware of any literature/published papers that deals with how an
organization evaluates itself as it decides on issues such as downsizing
(decreasing current structure), expanding (increasing current structure)? I
am particularly interested in whether models have been developed to
facilitate such an evaluation, and whether others have considered how to
develop such a model.

If you are looking for resources in addition to SD models, I recommend
Richard Dafts book, Organization Theory and Design. It contains a number
of models that rely on dependent and independent variables and which are
largely oriented to fitting the organization to its external environment as
well as fine tuning internal structure.
