Model CRASH Problem

Post by lmcburne »

Hi! I am having a problem with my model crashing. When I run my model in game mode and let the model sit for about 5 minutes between clicking forward, the model crashes.

I attached the model and a screenshot of the error message I get. This error occurred when I ran the model with a time step of 5 years. For years 0 to 50, I left the MS set to the default value of "80" and left the Fee Change set to the default of "0". After waiting 5 minutes, I set the MS to "40" and the Fee Change to ".07" and then clicked forward and the model crashed.

I don't know why this is happening or how to fix it. I have tried running the model on two different computers and it crashes on both. I am running an academic licence of Vensim DSS 6.4 on my Microsoft Surface Book computer. Can anyone help me?

Can you let me know the exact version of Vensim you are running?

I've run it here and had no problems at all.

One other question. Is the folder where the model is stored synced using something like DropBox, Google Drive or OneDrive?

I am running an academic license for Vensim DSS 6.4.

No, the model is stored on my computer and is not synced to Dropbox, Google Drive or One Drive.

I have re-written the description of my post to provide you with more details about when the program crashes.

I cannot re-create this. I did exactly as you do, and left the machine alone for over an hour. Tried moving forward and it ran without problems.

If you're on a Surface, can we assume Win 10?

Yes, the Surface I am using runs on Windows 10.

When you tested the model, did you change the "MS" and "Fee Change" values before or after waiting a few minutes?

This is what I am doing that causes the error to occur:

1. Open Vensim
2. Open LA Water Game Model
3. Click "Game"
4. Select "Override previous"
5. Change "Amount to move" from "1" to "5"
6. Click "Forward" x9 (click forward nine times, now the time should read "Time = 45") (an error message pops up unable to acheive desired accuracy at Time = 28.7)
7. Wait 10 minutes
8. Change the "MS" from "80" to "40"
9. Change the "Fee Change" from "0" to "0.07"
10. Model shuts down.

It works fine for me.

Are you sure there is no backup software running in the background? Things like DropBox will access a file and upload it to a server often creating a conflict.

I can't get this to happen either.

On an unrelated note: I don't think you need RK4 integration here. If you revert to Euler, you won't be bothered by the integration warning, which is likely arising from the discontinuities in the random process for emergency costs.

Also, conceptually, I think you want to connect Rate to Payments with an information arrow. Showing it as a flow implies that Payments drain the Rate, which isn't the case.

It doesn't help me to read that you can't get the same error that's on my screen.

My point is that I have the error, and I want the thing to work.

So what else have you got?

System information
Operating System: Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit (10.0, Build 10586)
Processor: Intel Xenon CPU E5-1650 v3 @ 3.70GHz (8 CPUs)
Memory 32768MB

I keep getting the following error –
“Vensim family of products has stopped

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available”

When I attempt to use my model with the following steps
1. Start a new simulation in game mode with the simulation results filename “test_1”.
2. Change time steps from “1” to “5”
3. Click continue simulation (right arrow) for about 10 clicks.
4. Stop simulation
5. Click IO object to put a new graph on the panel.

After the error message pops up, the program is forced to close.

I've followed both your sequences exactly, and unfortunately can't replicate the crash in either.

Can you try repeating one or both after setting a new, unique run name? That might give some hint as to whether this is a file access issue.

The model is saved to my desktop. I've tried setting a new, unique run name. That doesn't help. I still get the error.

Attached is the most recent model version.

Another long shot idea would be to move it to your Documents folder or something like that.

I assume your system is running in English?

I'll try this new copy on my Win10 desktop.

I am not a satisfied Vensim customer. The fact that you can not reproduce the error is irrelevant to me. And repeating the same questions, is not getting me any closer to software that runs.

To become a satisfied customer, I need one of two things:

1) software that runs

2) my money back

Here is want I want you to do:

1) Buy a new machine.

2) Send several thousand dollars to Ventana Systems to purchase Vensim licences.

3) Install your software from your new machine at home.

4) Run my model in accordance with my previous instructions.

5) Write back to me when it crashes and you have fixed it.

I'll email you and see if we can arrange a Webex/GotoMeeting to try and fix this. I've got a clean installation of Windows 10 Pro, the only software installed on it is Vensim and typically, it runs fine.

My gut feeling is that you've got some other software interfering with Vensim, it's just a case of figuring out what it is.

I think I've found the problem, so should have a fix for you early this week when I've had time to review the possible knock on effects.
