Dear Ed gallaher:
I joined the list yesterday and your posting and examples interested
me very much because I am trying to learn and use the concepts of
system-dynamics in a live process that is an industrial, large scale
alcoholic fermentation process for ethanol fuel production.
The process that I want to optimize is based on the metabolism of a
yeast population, that has differences between their elements ( the
population is not homogeneous) and inside the fermenters there is
also live contaminants ( bacteria and "wild yeasts").
The metabolism is affected not only by the medium ( the yeast
environment) but also by the rate that the substrates ( the
nutrients) are fed.
To complicate a little more the composition of the substrate is ever
changing because it is extracted from another live system ( the
sugar-cane fields) that is evolving in time, space, etc.
I would like very much to discuss how system-dynamics approach to
this optimization problem. Any hints ( bibliography, previous
discussions, etc.) are very wellcome.
Please excuse me not to answer your question at the SD0249.
