There have been a number of models developed on community health problems and
health care systems. The System Dynamics bibliography should provide
references on many of these.

Some of the most recent work on community health care systems and health
status improvement was done by Innovation Associates and the New England
Healthcare Assembly and a consortium of health care organizations in
developing a simulation model-based microworld called "Creating Integrated
Care and Healthier Communities". Aspects of the work are described in the
following two articles:

Hirsch, G. B. and C. S. Immediato, "Microworlds and generic structures as
resources for integrating care and improving health" System Dynamics Review,
15(3), Fall 1999, 315-330

Hirsch, G. B. and C.S. Immediato, "Design of simulators to enhance learning:
examples from a health care microworld" Proceedings of the 1998 Conference of
the System Dynamics Society, Quebec City

There was a full issue of System Dynamics Review which dealt with health
care.

Is anyone aware of past or present modeling of community health care

Depending on what you are referring to specifically when you say "community
health care systems" Ive done several that may be relevant to your
concerns.

The Healthcare EMBA class at Baldwin Wallace College is working on an
Idealized Health System Design Project. Community health is a large
component of the model. We are largely in the conceptualization stages for
the second generation of the model.

The first model (by the class that graduated last December) was lacking in
a number of aspects. A lot of study and research since then (in terms of SD
modeling [ Forresters Urban Dynamics, inclusive of the Readings book
edited by Mass, has been a huge insight] as well as epidemiology, public
health, economics, social determinants of health and care delivery) should
significantly improve the model this time around.

We (the faculty working on the project) have considered putting the project
into the public domain but at present we dont feel there is sufficient
narrative descriptions and explanations to give clear guidance to
participants outside the classroom. As a super-broad focus statement, we
are looking at the dynamics of population based health status, with care
delivery (healthcare) as a subsystem of the whole system.

What are you looking at (in terms of scope and focus)?
