In response to Kevin Agatsteins query about health care redesign models,
there have been several SD-based Learning Environments (Microworlds) dealing
with change in health care systems. One of these was developed by Innovation
Associates with The Healthcare Forum. It is described in "Mastering the
Transition to Capitation", by Gary B. Hirsch and Jennifer M. Kemeny, The
Healthcare Forum Journal, May/June, 1994. It deals with the shift in
investments, emphasis, and thinking that are necessary as health care
reimbursement patterns shift. Another was developed by Innovation Associates
with the New England Healthcare Assembly and is called Creating Integrated
Care and Healthier Communities. As the name suggests, it includes modules
that deal with improvement of both delivery system performance (through
vetrical integration among other strategies) and community health status.
Aspects of its design are described in "Design of Simulators to Enhance
Learning: Examples from a Health Care Microworld", by Gary B. Hirsch and C.
Sherry Immediato, Proceedings of the 1998 Conference of the System Dynamics
Society in Quebec City, Canada. Another article on this Microworld and its
use by Hirsch and Immediato will be coming out later this year in the System
Dynamics Review.

Health Care System Redesign Models
Dear SD Community
I was wondering if anyone can point me to some good journal references regarding
SD/ST being used to support Public Health Care System redesign effort. The
redesign work can range for example from changing disbursment policies to
managing interest groups, and anything in between.
I can be contacted at kevin.a.agatstein@us.arthurandersen.com. Thank you in
advance for any help in this matter.
Warmest regards,
Kevin A. Agatstein
