Export to SVG

Post by Paul Ader »

Hi,

I am having a problem with the new Export Sketch to SVG functionality in Vensim version 9.2 and would appreciate your help.

1. I opened the attached .MDL file in Vensim PLE Version 9.2.1 x64 Build TK-220303.00128
  • The software was downloaded on a trial basis
  • The .MDL file was created by a senior research associate at the National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration West based at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust using a fully licensed version of the software.
  • The work was carried out for a Ripple Effects Mapping project at Active Gloucester and I have their permission to share the model with you.
2. I made sure that the whole model was displayed on the screen and then used the Export as SVG option from the View menu.

3. When I opened the attached SVG file in Inkscape, I could not see anything (the same happened when opening the SVG file in Chrome). To make the SVG visible, I had to select an object and zoom into it (at 25,381% for an arrowhead!) and then bring the zoom back to 200%. This allowed me to see the image shown below. As you can see the SVG file has created a narrow line-wrapped version of the text for each element in the Vensim model, has used a relatively large font, and, as highlighted by the use of different colours on one of the elements below, has put each wrapped line into a separate text box. The separation of each line into a separate text box makes it very difficult/time-consuming to work with the data in SVG.

Could you let me know if there is a way around this problem?

Thank you

Kind regards

Paul

Thanks for the link. I had seen the "Embed text in SVG" post and could not see a direct connection between the issues. If you can see the connection, please let me know. Cheers.

I'll have to raise this as a bug for further exploration.

For now, you can still copy/paste as a bitmap if you need to.

Hi. Has this been raised as a bug? If so, do you know when it might be addressed? The reason I ask is copying the sketch and pasting it as a bitmap creates an image that is unreadable. I look forward to an update. Thanks

It has been raised as a bug. The underlying framework we use for Vensim is responsible for the SVG creation, so we are a little stuck until it is addressed.
