read_ini file

Hello.

I'm working in DSS, 9.3.5, x64.

I am trying to adjust options in my model. When I select Tools|Options, I receive a VPE dialog with the test read_ini_file, then unable to access global info.

Any thoughts about why this is being thrown?

Thanks.

Eliot

What does VPE mean?

And are you still using the old GUI? It's becoming increasingly difficult to keep the old GUI functioning, there will be cases like this.

Vensim. Program. Error.

Yes, using the old GUI. I moved to the new GUI and the problem resolved.

While I appreciate the challenge of keeping both GUIs alive, I do have 20+ years of teaching materials in the old format. It's going to be a while before I convert, if at all.

Thanks for the pointer.

The traditional sketch style is still available in the new GUI. All other functions should be reasonably straightforward to use, we designed it so it should be intuitive to existing users.

Vensim has for a while been giving me “Vensim Program Error: read_ini_file”, OK, “Stop from Vensim: Unable to access global info” (I'm on version 9.3.5, Windows, old GUI).

Today, new sketches have black background, as do new variables. And I still can't changes the default options.

The advice from the Forum was "this is hard; use the new GUI". Well, the new GUI lacks a bunch of shortcuts and functionalities, such that there's way more mousing back and forth just to do routine model development. It makes my hands hurt.

So is there a way to fix this "can't access global info" in the old GUI?

Specific guidance much appreciated.

If you let us know what functionality you're missing, it's likely that we can implement it in the new GUI more quickly than we can fix the old.

The old GUI doesn't even run on the Mac any more. If you really want to continue using the old GUI, all I can suggest is going back to version 9.0 and use that.

I recently have the same error when opening the model (read_ini file error). Could you tell me how to check if I am using the old or the new GUI and how can I move to the new GUI? I am using VENSIM DSS 10.1.3 (I am sorry for my simple question but I am not good at PC settings)

I have checked the GUI as your guidance and find that I am using the new GUI.
However the error still happens everytime when I open the model.
Is there any other reason related to this error?

Can you detail exactly what you do please? Do you click File->Open, or double click in Windows explorer or something else? Also are you running Windows or a Mac with a Windows emulator?

I am using Windows. I double click on the model (mdl file) I created before (store in Drive D). Usually, this error will appear but the model still work as normal after that. There are also several times this error does not appear even when I do the same way to open a model (double click on the model).
Sometimes, when I am changing the formulation of the variables, the software suddenly crashes and closes. I am not sure if this problem is related to the error "read=ini file" I encounter at the beginning or not.
