Applications are invited for posts in the Department of
Operational Research. There will be one appointment to a
Senior Lectureship, or two Lectureship appointments,
depending on qualifications, experience and employment record
of applicant. An exceptional candidate may be considered for
a Readership.
The prime priority for this recruitment is to strengthen the
Departments coverage of decision analysis and related
fields. Other relevant areas of specialisation include
problem structuring methods, computer simulation and OR
applications to health care. If two appointments are made, a
broader range of research areas will be of interest.

OPERATIONAL RESEARCH AT LSE:
THE SCHOOL
The London School of Economics is a world-class academic
institution. It is an independent school, formally part of
the University of London system, which concentrates on
teaching and research across the full range of the social,
political and economic sciences. Its reputation for academic
excellence is outstanding. In the 1996 Research Assessment
Exercise, 98% of staff were entered as research active, and
83% of the Schools staff work in areas rated 5 or 5*.
Approximately 50% of students are post-graduate. The School
maintains close links with government, industry and the
professions, aided by its central London location. The
School has recently appointed a new Director, the
distinguished sociologist Professor Anthony Giddens.
Both teaching and research are supported by the British
Library of Political and Economic Sciences, both the working
Library of the School, and a national collection of material
for research. Information technology provision, though not
outstanding, is adequate and improving.
THE DEPARTMENT OF OPERATIONAL RESEARCH
Operational Research became an independent department as LSE
in October 1996, but has a continuous history of more than
40 years at the School. Along with departmental status,
resources were granted for an extra appointment or
appointments, which we are now seeking to fill.
The Departments distinctive posture is to maintain
expertise across the spectrum of general purpose operational
research methods, from hard to soft. At present there
are 5 posts (one joint with Statistics); current permanent
staff members are Gautam Appa, John Howard, David Lane,
Susan Powell and Jonathan Rosenhead. There are also three
Visiting Professors: George Mitchell, Larry Phillips and
Maurice Shutler. The Departments teaching was rated
excellent by the HEFCE quality assessment in 1994. In the
1996 Research Assessment Exercise, the two Units of
Assessment in which Department members were entered were
rated 5 and 5* respectively.
The Departments degree offerings are currently being
rationalised. When this process is complete we will offer a
BSc in Management Sciences, and MScs in Operational Research
and in Decision Sciences. (Whether to continue the MSc in
Analysis for Health Care Decisions is under discussion.)
Eight full-time research students are registered in the
Department. Funded projects from both EPSRC and ESRC are
investigating the applicability of problem structuring
methods in a range of practical settings.
More information is available in the Further Particulars
which will be provided on request, or by contacting
Professor Jonathan Rosenhead.
